General Guidelines for Documenting Sources

Author

The author's name is written last name comma first name initial (if available).

Place a period after the complete name.
Hall, Robert.
Matthews, Andrew L.

If an editor's name appears on the title page instead of an author, begin with the name of the editor followed by a comma and ed.
Gibson, Raymond, ed.
Stevenson, Cynthia E., ed.

Title

Always take the title of a work from the title page, not from the cover or from the top of a page.

State the full title, including any subtitle.

Use a colon and a space to separate a title from a subtitle, unless the title ends in a question mark or exclamation point.

Include other punctuation only if it is part of the title.

Except, follow the title with a period.

Capitalize the first word, the last word, and all principal words.

Do not capitalize articles (a, an, the), prepositions (between, in, of, to), coordinating conjunctions (and, but, for, or), and to in infinitives when they fall in the middle of a title.

Italicize titles.

Publication Information

Give the city of publication, the publisher's name, the year of publication, and the medium of publication.

These facts should come directly from the book, not a bibliography or a library catalog.

The publisher's name generally appears on the title page.

The city and date may be found on the title page or on the reverse of the title page.

Use a colon between the city of publication and the publisher, a comma between the publisher and the date, and a period after the date.

If several cities are listed, give only the first.

Shorten the publisher's name using these guidelines:

Omit articles (A, An, The)

Use the last name only if the publisher's name is a person's name. If more than one person's name, cite only the first name.  (Dodd, Funk, Harcourt)

Use standard abbreviations.  (Acad., Assn., UP)

If the publisher's name is commonly abbreviated with capital initials, use the abbreviation as the publisher's name.  (ALA, GPO, SIRS)

If the year of publication is not recorded on the title page, use the latest copyright date, usually found on the back of the title page.

The medium of publication for a printed book is Print and should be followed by a period.

No Publication or Pagination Given

N.p. No place of publication given (inserted before the colon)
n.p. No publisher given (inserted after the colon)
n.d. No date of publication given
N. pag. No pagination given

Two or More Books by the Same Author

Give the name in the first entry only.

For the next entry or entries type three hyphens, followed by a period and the title.

The hyphens stand for the name in the preceding entry.
