Jacob Waite Blackwell a third grade student has won his own copy of Hurricane Heroes of Galveston by Mary Pope Osborne. Along with his classmates Jabob entered the Scholastic Storyworks Jr. Magazine contest in December 2018. Storyworks is part of Jacob's 3rd grade reading program. Teacher, Mrs. Ashley Klier, has her students enter most contests put on by this program every two months.
This contest asked students to read about the deadly Galveston hurricane of 1900. To follow the reading, students were to write a journal entry from the eyes of 14 year old Harry Maxon, a survivor of the hurricane. They were encouraged to use descriptive details to explain how he felt during this natural disaster and what he did to help others. Jacob was one of five winners from around the country. Jacob's entry was the first entry the company received that featured an epilogue! Mrs. Klier, his classmates, and everyone at Ridgewood Elementary are so proud of his accomplishments.
