Kindergarten Trip to The Pumpkin Patch

On October 16, 2017, the kindergarten classes from Ridgewood Elementary journeyed to Schumaker farms for an enjoyable educational experience.  Linda Porteus taught us  how pumpkins grow. We learned about what happens to the seeds, how bees pollinate the blossoms and how pumpkins develop.

We rode the hay wagon to the pumpkin patch and got to pick our very own pumpkin to take home. We saw many pumpkins of all shapes and sizes.

After we ate our packed lunches and cleaned up, we had more farm experiences. We met and got to interact with many animals including goats and peacocks. In the barn we found a hay wall we could climb and a maze that took us through to the other side of the barn. The grain bin with the giant corn box was a fun sensory activity to participate in.

Pumpkin activities continued in the classrooms after returning to school. Ms. Posey’s class labeled parts of a pumpkin and helped to scoop out the pumpkin seeds so the pumpkin could be turned into a jack-o-lantern for display in the classroom.  Mrs. Addy and Mrs. Buchanan recalled the events of the day with their classes, and asked each student to do a type 1 journal writing of their favorite activity. The students had to label their illustrations.

An amazing day was had by all.
